Learned HelplessnessLearned Dependency or Learned Helplessness
The definition of learned helplessness can be demonstrated in a behavioral laboratory model in which exposure to a series of unforeseen adverse situations gives rise to a sense of helplessness or an inability of the subject to cope with or devise ways to escape such situations, even when escape is possible. A state of apathy or passive behavior induced by negative conditioning, which can include verbal and/or physical intimidation or abuse.
Because junior high students are forced to take P.E. classes, it is very likely there
will be a higher number of individuals who have acquired the condition of learned
helplessness. The outcome is different in junior varsity and varsity sports programs
because the players have a choice not to participate; however, there are cases of
learned helplessness that are rooted in other sources.
Learned helplessness can originate in an individual's low self-esteem. It also can be caused by not wanting to participate in team activities as a result of students who have experienced taunting and harassed their entire time in physical education classes. It is no wonder that these individuals don't want to have anything to do with team sports.

The Effect of Sportsmanship and Motivation on Athletic Aggression

The main objective of this experiment was to find what relationships threre are between sportsmanship, motivation and athletic aggression. There we three preset propositions that they anticipated for their theory: (a) self-determined sport motivation will be positively predictive of sportspersonship orientations, (b) sportspersonship orientations will mediate the relationship between self-determined sport motivation and athletic aggression, and (c) sportspersonship orientations will impact athletic aggression in two distinctive ways. A positive relationship between sports orientation and instrumental aggression is expected. Yet, a negative relationship is anticipated between the orientations and the reactive aggression.…show more content…
Traditionally, investigations have identified the most important factors of sportspersonship behaviors. These investigations lead to three theoretical ideas. The first approach is the social learning. This approach believes that young athletes' different experiences of reinforcement mold their perceptions of what is appropriate or inappropriate conducts within their sport. The structural-developmental approach has related the participation in high-quality sportspersonship behaviors to the moral development of young athletes. The believers in this perspective believe that the more a child uses his or her moral reasoning the less likely they are to use aggression on the sports field, thereby suggesting behavioral predisposition parallel to those associated with sportspersonship.
The social-psychological view is the third perspective. This perspective is written about in the most depth. It explains that sportsmanship can be views in5 different ways. These five views are, "as "concern and respect for the rules and officials, social conventions, the opponent, as well as one's full commitment to one's sport and the relative absence of a negative approach to sport participation." Therefore, the athlete, would be have in correlation with its support of the five sportsmanship orientations. Another important aspect of this theory is that it sorts out the difference between the concept of aggression and that of sportsmanship.
Experiments also show that
