About Us

Headteacher

Lucy Barnes

Lucy was born and brought up in Maidenhead, she attended Maidenhead College School and then gained a BA (Hons) from Wolverhampton University, in European Studies and French. After graduating, she worked initially in publishing and then went on to obtain her Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Roehampton University in 1993 and has worked in education ever since, including some time teaching at a bilingual school in France.

She has taught in Primary Schools in Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead and Wokingham, holding a number of senior roles across the schools. Whilst working for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, she was selected by the borough  to work with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority on developing aspects of the English National Curriculum. She then went on to work for Slough Education Action Zone  where she provided support to a number of schools to improve standards across the curriculum. She was appointed Deputy Head teacher at Lea Infant School in 2004 and subsequently appointed Head teacher in 2006. She gained the National Professional Qualification for Head teachers in 2008 and prior to working at Beech Lodge was Head teacher in Slough from January 2009.

She has a special interest in Nurture Groups and the support of children with additional educational and/or  social and emotional needs.

Founders

Beech Lodge School was set up by Daniela Shanly, Emma Barklem and Lucy Barnes (Headteacher) who all shared a vision for an alternative approach to learning that truly allows those children whose needs are not being met in Mainstream School to flourish. Driven by an enormous amount of passion and dedication they are proud to have opened the school to the first cohort of children in January 2013

Daniela Szmigielska Shanly – Proprietor
Adoptive parent to two children, Daniela recognised through her own personal experience that it is vital for some young people to have an alternative approach to learning in order to maximise their educational potential, wellbeing and increase self esteem. All of which motivated her to set up Beech Lodge School.

She has a strong personal commitment to the needs of vulnerable children and is actively involved in adoption and children’s charities. Daniela is a Governor at the BCA Further Education College and is a Member of Forest Bridge School in Maidenhead. Daniela’s background is in Advertising and as a Theatrical Literary Agent.

Daniela takes overall responsibility for the effective running of the school. She works closely with the Headteacher and is present at the school on a daily basis so pupils and parents know her well. She places high importance on the welfare and health & safety of pupils and staff, has undertaken Safer Recruitment training and is trained to Child Protection Level 3. Daniela also heads up the Fagus development team.

Advisory Board

The School has an Advisory Board which oversees the work of the school and helps secure the school’s aims. The Advisory Board under the Chairmanship of the Proprietor comprises a team of people who all have a connection with the school. The Advisory Board meets regularly and keeps abreast of its responsibilities. It is strongly involved in strategic planning so that resources, both human and material are best used to meet the needs of pupils.

Naomi Angell – Family Lawyer
Naomi is a leading family lawyer, specialising in adoption and child protection cases. For 10 years she chaired the adoption panel of a national voluntary adoption panel and has been closely involved in the parliamentary reform of adoption law, including the new adoption guidance. She is co-chair of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society. She regularly writes, lectures and is involved with the media on children’s law issues. She has three grown up adopted children.

Emma Barklem – Co-Founder, Director, Therapist and Beech Lodge parent
Emma is an experienced therapist, having worked predominantly with children and young people in a variety of educational settings. With four children of her own she believes strongly in creating an environment that values an individual approach to learning whilst maintaining a sense of community to develop essential social skills.

Becci Best – Director – Beech Lodge School
Becci is the co-author of the Fagus educational resource. She graduated with a First-Class Psychology degree from the University of Manchester in 2012. She has worked within schools as a Mentor, Learning Support Assistant, Assistant Speech and Language Therapist and Researcher. Becci has a particular interest in studying the effects of early childhood trauma and disrupted attachment on children’s emotional and social development. In the future, she hopes to continue working with teachers to enhance their knowledge of emotional and social development in order to improve outcomes for children with additional needs. Becci is currently undertaking a doctorate in Educational, Child and Adolescent Psychology.

Patrick Burrowes – Bursar, Bradfield College
Originally a Criminal Lawyer, Patrick spent the majority of his career in the Financial world including leading management positions in Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Credit Suisse and most recently as Head of EMEA Cash Equities at JP Morgan Cazenove. In 2014 an opportunity arose to pursue a long-held passion for education and he took on the role of Bursar at Bradfield College – a 760 pupil co-educational Independent secondary school with a significant annual turnover. Patrick is also responsible for the delivery of operational functions, regulatory compliance, strategic direction of the company and management of 500+ teaching and non-teaching staff. His main interests are his wife and two teenage sons.

Andrew Griffin – Community School Headteacher and Beech Lodge parent
Born in Australia, Andrew started his teaching career delivering Outdoor Education programmes to Primary and Secondary school children in Tasmania. After moving to the UK, he taught in several schools, worked as a Maths Advisor for a Local Authority and then became a Headteacher successfully leading 3 large primary schools. Andrew’s current school has achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark and delivers in-house programmes to support Mental Health.
